The climax of the Honku valley trek is its remote glaciers and a formidable pass which required tough muscles. You need to be in good physical condition and be familiar with elementary climbing. The trek begins by flying into the heart of the Himalaya to the village of Lukla. From here you will cross a high pass into a remote valley, steadily acclimatizing along the way, as you have to move toward base camp and establish a high camp on the glacier from where you will attempt the summit.

With excellent views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Lhotse and other spectacular peaks, this is a great trek and climb away from the heavily trekked region of the Khumbu in an ancient Sherpa land where local people still graze yaks, cook on yak dung fires and live a very simple life. There are many approaches to Mera, some are easy and some require the crossing of high and difficult passes, making a trek to the peak a real mountaineering adventure. The effort is rewarded with spectacular scenery and ultimately one of the finest viewpoints in Nepal. This is a perfect trip for the mountaineer who wants to make the most their Himalayan adventure enjoying both unique culture of the region and climbing in traditional Himalayan alpine style.

By its standard route from the Mera La, the ascent is technically straightforward; however, after a heavy fall of snow or when the maze of crevasses are open, the way can be long and demanding. Far and above the most rewarding aspect of a trip to Mera is a chance to venture into a little-visited and as yet unspoiled region of Nepal, where the hillsides are still densely forested and self-sufficiency is essential. There is also, of course, the pleasure of climbing above 6000 m.

After climbing Mera Peak, we will follow the trail to Rato-odar, Pachpokhari by crossing a renowned Ampulapcha pass down to Chukkung proceeding along the classic Everest route to Tengobche Monastery, the spiritual center of the Khumbu region. Inside the monastery, are incredibly ornate wall hangings, a 20-foot sculpture of Buddha, as well as the musical instruments and robes of the Lamas. We may be fortunate enough to see the Lama perform a ceremony in which the monastery will be filled with the sounds of mystical chanting and music. We continue our hike to Namchhe, a colorful village with many wonderful and interesting shops and vendors, fabulous food, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. On the way down, we can visit the Sherpa Museum that houses an exhibit on traditional Sherpa lifestyle and a fabulous photography display by a local Nepalese naturalist. The next day, we will continue down to Lukla from where we fly by twin-engine Otter back to Kathmandu.  Our highly trained, skilled and experienced trekking guide will lead you throughout the trekking period. We will spend ample time acclimatizing to new altitudes for increased safety and comfort. High Altitude Dreams is proud of our experienced guides, cooks, porters and kitchen staff.
